Santo Domingo. – La Corporación del Acueducto y Alcantarillado de Santo Domingo (CAASD) realizó este viernes una jornada de reforestación en la obra de toma del acueducto Duey, municipio Villa Altagracia, donde fueron sembradas más de 300 plantas de cacao, en aras de proteger su cuenca.
El subdirector de la CAASD, Francisco Campusano, encabezó la iniciativa que forma parte de las actividades que se realizan dentro de la celebración del Mes Mundial del Agua, instituido por la Organización de las Naciones Unidas (ONU).
Colaboradores de la institución y comunitarios participaron de la jornada que busca proteger esa fuente acuífera. Las plantaciones contribuirán con la productividad de la zona y su desarrollo económico.
Campusano resaltó que, las labores beneficiarán, no solo a la comunidad, sino también a miles de familias residentes en sectores de Santo Domingo Oeste que reciben el líquido que proviene de ese sistema de abastecimiento.
Esta jornada también forma parte de la agenda que realiza la institución, como parte de la conmemoración de la Semana del Agua, que inició el pasado lunes 22 de marzo, con un recorrido encabezado por el director ejecutivo de la CAASD, Felipe Suberví, en el primer acueducto colonial de la ciudad de Santo Domingo.
Asimismo, Suberví reiteró el llamado a la población a cuidar los ríos y a dar un uso racional del preciado líquido, que cada día se encuentra más afectado con la desforestación de los bosques y el cambio climático.
El funcionario explicó que, con la iniciativa, la CAASD busca crear consciencia sobre el cuidado de las fuentes acuíferas y la importancia del consumo responsable y racional del agua en esta época de sequía.
Duey
Este sistema, que data de 1952, capta sus aguas de manera directa a través de un dique derivador con una toma caucasiana, cuyas fuentes son los ríos Duey y Haina.
Los caudales producidos por este acueducto son conducidos por gravedad hacia la ciudad de Santo Domingo a través de una línea. Entre los sectores que se abastecen de Duey se encuentran Los Alcarrizos, Los Girasoles y los sectores ubicados en el entorno de la avenida República de Colombia.
Importancia del Día Mundial del Agua
El Día Mundial del Agua se celebra cada 22 de marzo para recordar la relevancia de este líquido esencial. A pesar de que todas las actividades sociales y económicas dependen en gran medida del abastecimiento de agua dulce y de su calidad, 2,200 millones de personas viven sin acceso a agua potable.
Esta celebración tiene por objetivo concienciar acerca de la crisis mundial del agua y la necesidad de buscar medidas para abordarla de manera que, se alcance el Objetivo de Desarrollo Sostenible No 6: Agua y saneamiento para todos antes de 2030.
El Día Mundial del Agua se propuso en la Conferencia de las Naciones Unidas sobre Medio Ambiente y Desarrollo efectuada en Río de Janeiro, Brasil del tres al 14 de junio de 1992. De la cual, la Asamblea General de las Naciones Unidas adoptó el 22 de diciembre de 1992 la resolución A/RES/47/1931 que declaró el 22 de marzo de cada año como Día Mundial del Agua.
